1. If your tank is square or rectangular. Use a tape measure to determine the height, width and length, in feet. Multiply these three numbers together to determine the cubic feet. Multiply the cubic feet by 7.48 and you will have the tank’s capacity in gallons.
2. If your tank is round. Measure the diameter and length, in feet. Half of the diameter is the radius. Multiply the radius (in feet) by itself, then multiply that number by 3.14. Multiply that number by the length of the tank in feet to determine the cubic feet. Multiply the cubic feet by 7.48 and you will have the tank’s capacity in gallons.
3. If your tank has a round top and bottom with straight sides, you’ll have to measure the flat and the curved sections separately.
For the flat section, measure the height, width and length, in feet, of the flat parts of the tank. Multiply these three numbers together to determine the cubic feet. Multiply the cubic feet by 7.48. This is the volume of the tank’s flat section.
For the rounded sections of the tank, picture the curved parts of the tank without the rectangular part you’ve measured. Use the steps in #2 to measure and calculate the volume of the curved parts of the tank.
Add the two volume numbers together and you should have your tank’s total capacity.
